Set in 10 acres of private grounds by 500 metres of trout river, you couldn't ask for a more tranquil environment. Located midst some of the most beautiful scenery in France, close to the spectacular Pyrénées, Cathar Casltes, countless attractions as well as enjoy the superb facilities of the Moulin - 13m heated pool, Croquet Lawn, Boules Pitch, Table Tennis, Badminton, 6 Bikes, 10ft Chess Board. The grounds are a mix of formal gardens, woodland, meadow, orchards and herb and vegetable plots, The garden leads to a woodland walk through sculpted natural flower beds by the river Arize up to a beach below the cascade. A perfect place to absorb the sounds, sights and smells of nature.

The Kitchen
Fully equipped to cater for 26 guests when we run our residential courses in Painting, Photography, and Woodturning. Complete with large island unit for food preparation. A Paul Bocuse Rosiere Range with 2 ovens, 4 rings and a vast hot plate. 2 large fridge freezers, 2 Dish Washers, Microwave and various blenders.
A Cook
Available locally at 12 Euros an hour. Our neighbour Catrine will also wash up and clean any time at 10 Euros per hour
Domestic
The Moulin is cleaned thoroughly every Saturday, Linen and towels changed> A good time to visit the colourfull St Girons Market.
Wine Cellar / Welcome pack.
We provide a bottle per person per week of chateau wine along with the same number of beers in the fridge. We always have 200 plus bottles of available in our racks. Many blended by the owner. Including Merlot, An AOC Grenache Noir / Syrah blend, 2 blends of Rose, Chardonnay and a Chardonnay / Sauvignon Blanc blend.
The Rooms
The Moulin is full of the personal effects of the owners, Nick & Fran Davidson. Including antiques, paintings, and a large library on the 1st floor. We hope you enjoy and respect these.
Pool
A superb pool complex includes a 13m heated pool, a hacienda pool bar with pergola giving semi shade in the middle of the day. Badminton Court, Table Tennis, a 10ft Chess Board surrounded by lawns and flower beds. The pool is opened, checked and cleaned daily to keep in pristine condition.
The Grange
A sympathetically converted old timber framed barn, combining the old collombage with modern timber cladding. This provides additional accommodation with 4 ensuite double rooms, plus a light filled studio gallery where we do our art and photography courses. And below are two workshops (One where we do out turning courses) and a laundry.
The Garden
An attreactive mix of formal gardens, orchards, flower beds and raised vegetable beds, all automatically irrigated a sprinkler system to keep it lush through the height of summer. There is also a woodland walk through natural flower beds by the river to a pebble beach belwo the cascade.An exquisite spot to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of nature.
Wild Life
A haven for lovers of wild life. With regulas visits of Kingfishers, Dippers, Nutchatchs, Tree Creepers, Black Redstarts, Woodpeckers, Owls, Wagtails, Tits etc even the occasional Golden Oriel. Plus overhead, Kites, Buzzards and Eagles.
Deer, Sanglies, Pine Martins, Squirrels, Foxes & Badgers are never that far away.
Various rare wild flowers including Bee orchids.
Bikes
We have6 bikes with helmets available. Bike rides to suit all standards, but avoid wearing a yellow jersey as the Tour de France usually passes by in July.
Wedding Parties
We can accommodate 24 in the Moulin and Grange, plus a similar number on a B & B basis in a friend's Chateau nearby. We have the crockery, cutlery and glasses and staff to cater for a party of 46 on our Terrace, covered but in the open. overlooking the croquet lawn.
Golfing Parties
We can cater for parties of 14 - 20 golfers in April & October when the weather is warm and the footing firm. Excellent championship,golf course only 10 minutes away.
Courses
We run residential courses in painting, Digital Photography and Woodturning, in mid season. The courses combine a 6 day holiday with 5 half days of expert tuition. The perfect blend of inspiration and relaxation. Combination courses, where one partner woodturns whilst the other paints or photographs, have proved very successful. Partners can be purely residential and enjoy the facilities of the Moulin whilst their partner attends tuition. In any event you will get together for half the day to enjoy the spectacular surroundings or facilities of the Moulin and look forward to a convivial dinner party with delicious food every evening.
The courses are so much fun that over half our guests return for 3, 4 , 5 , 6 or as many as 10 times to experience the wonderful ambience of the Moulin de la Materette.
