A modernised village house with roof-terrace, balcony and garden, sleeping seven people (plus cot) in four bedrooms. Set in a quiet street on the edge of the scenic village of Lapradelle.
For romantics only. A very special place.
Lapradelle lies in the valley between Perpignan and Foix. The road east gives easy access to the Mediterranean. To the west, the road leads to Foix, Carcassonne, Toulouse or Andorra. The river Boulzane flows through the village. To the south of Lapradelle the Cathar castle, Chateau Puilaurens, stands high on its rocky outcrop, overlooking the valley. The village boasts at least one bar, one restaurant, a baker’s, a general store, a post office and other seasonal shops which open between spring and autumn. There are many beautiful walks in the area, strenuous or otherwise. In the summer months, a little tourist train, ‘Le Papillon’, takes its leisurely course between Axat in the west via Lapradelle to Espira de l’Agly near Rivesaltes. We always say that Lapradelle is best suited to second (or first) honeymooners and to anyone interested in France profonde, country life, fauna and flora, walking, bird-watching, castle-bagging and history.
Rue du Cabanot is set on the edge of the village, well away from the main road. An easy short walk takes you down to the riverside and up into the village itself. At its far end, Rue du Cabanot turns into a pleasant footpath leading by the side of the river towards Caudies. There is very little traffic in the street.
The house is on three floors with breakfasting balcony, roof terrace and garden. The ground floor consists of a twin bedroom and single bedroom, shower room with basin and w.c., and kitchenette. The back door leads to the external patio, barbecue and garden. On the first floor there is the double bedroom with cot and another twin bedroom; the bathroom with bath and shower and w.c.; and a separate w.c. Also on the first floor is the kitchen/dining-room and pantry. The kitchen is very well equipped with a four-ring electric cooker, dishwasher, washing-machine, microwave, freezer and two fridges. From the dining area, porte-fenetres lead out on to the breakfasting balcony with barbecue, table and seating. There is a telephone on the first floor.
The second floor consists entirely of the enormous living-room with comfortable seating, satellite television, telephone, radio/cassette, many books and cassettes, beautiful beamed ceiling. At one end there are windows looking out on to the quiet street below; at the other, porte-fenetres lead on to the spacious roof-terrace. The view from the south-facing roof-terrace and from the balcony below is truly spectacular. You look over the garden, the village, and the Boulzane valley, up to the Cathar castle and to the ring of mountains beyond. An inspiring sight, serenely beautiful.
The house is all electric. Linen and towels are provided, but you should bring your own towels for sunbathing or for the beach. There are no extra costs. Heating is by electric fan or convector heaters. Electricity is free except between late autumn and early spring when we can reach agreement on covering heating costs. We send keys to you in advance. The standard of equipment, furnishings and décor is very high throughout. There is ample parking at the end of Rue du Cabanot only a few yards away.
There are facilities for water-sports at Axat and Quillan where international competitions are often held. Mountaineering schools operate in the area. Tennis courts and most other sports facilities are to be found at Quillan. The ski resorts begin in the upper valley of the river Aude, south of Axat, the principal ones being at Les Angles, Font Romeu and the Cerdagne. There are excellent restaurants in the area, many well written up in the house’s travel journal. Flights from London Stansted and other UK airports go to Carcassonne, Perpignan and Gerona. Otherwise, the main international airports are at Toulouse and Barcelona.
