Climate

Far enough away from the Atlantic coast to miss the on-shore weather and sheltered by the Massif Central mountain range to the East, the Charente has its own Micro-climate and so enjoys some of the most reliably hot and sunny weather in France.

Conviviality

The South Charente is still predominantly a working rural community where there is little commercialisation and the local people extend a warm and friendly welcome. Traditional ways of life are still followed and they hold a special charm that you cannot help but enjoy.

Countryside

The Charente is the southernmost department of the Poitou-Charente region. The countryside moves from vineyards and fields to rolling hills and forests, with hills and gorges in the east and south together with many rivers and lakes which provide the backbone to the region.

The South Charente has had many different inhabitants over thousands of years from the Romans onwards, many of whom have left their mark, the monolithic church at nearby Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, for example, adding to the beauty and interest of this village. In the north of the area, Barbezieux is in the heart of Petite Champagne country and surrounded by châteaux, chapels and Romanesque abbeys.
West Charente is dominated by Cognac, the second largest city of the region and of course the landscape is dominated by the vines which follow the contours across the countryside providing beautiful scenery all year round.
