BURGUNDY TOURISM

Burgundy considers itself the heart of France, a diverse and prosperous region with world famous wines, earthy but excellent cuisine and magnificent architecture.

Take the time to discover Burgundy. Leaf through the finest pages of France's history: Alesia, Vauban, Rameau, Cîteaux, Lamartine, Solutré, Colette....

These are just a few of the famous names that have left their mark on France. Sample their gastronomic specialities. Enjoy... A trip on the river? A jaunt into history?

Under the Duke of Valois, Burgundy was France's most powerful rival, with territory extending well beyond its present boundaries. By the 16th century, however, the Duchy was ruled by governors appointed by the French king, but it still managed to keep its privileges and traditions.

Burgundy invites you to take an exceptional journey in time, following the traces of Vercingetorix, the Golden Fleece, and the great Dukes of the West.

Burgundy, now as in the past, is a wealthy region, a centre of medieval religious faith which produced Romanesque masterpieces at Vézelay, Fontenay and Cluny.

Dijon is a magnificent city, filled with the great palaces of the old Burgundian nobility and a collection of great paintings and sculptures in the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

In winter, there are frequent spells of fine, cold weather. In the summer, it is hot with just a few welcome showers. Autumn (grape harvest time) is generally pleasant and sunny. Probably one of our most beautiful times, where the colours of nature blend harmoniously with the virile blue of the sky.

The vineyards of the Côte d'Or, the Côte de Beaune and Châblis yield some of the world's most famous wines. Other richly varied landscapes - from the wild forests of the Morvan to the lush farmland of the Brionnais - produce snails, Bresse chicken and Charolais beef.
